SABIC – Plastic Application Development Center

SABIC (Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation), a leading multinational petrochemical company appointed us to design an interior concept for their new SABIC Plastics Application Development Center (SPADC). This new facility located in Riyadh Techno Valley research complex at the King Saud University (KSU) campus with approximately 43,000 square meters of research facilities, offices and manufacturing of plastics polymers, is estimated to cost SR475 million ($127 million). The Center will serve as a pilot project to help build Saudi Arabia’s knowledge economy by facilitating the collaboration between university scientists and end-manufacturers in plastics industries.

The client, dissatisfied with the interior design solution provided by the project architect, asked us to propose a new alternative. Opening up the building vertically, our design activated the Atrium thus creating a new Activity Based Work environment, which through the employment of technology enables completely mobile and flexible “real time” collaboration expected of contemporary workforce. Each floor was divided into several working neighborhoods separated with areas for collaboration such as library, coffee house, different types of formal and informal meeting and lounge spaces.

Since the project was already under construction our interior design had to respect much of the architectural layout and structural details. It was also critical to develop an interior solution that was both expedient and cost-effective. The Center will be a LEED-certified building.
